Nipple and areola types vary naturally in projection, size, colour and symmetry. Common descriptions include projecting, flat, inverted and unilateral forms. A flat areola or differences between breast nipple types do not by themselves require treatment. The important distinction is whether the appearance is longstanding or represents a new change.
The cause of an inverted nipple may be congenital anatomy, shortened milk ducts, fibrous tethering, changes after pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous breast surgery, trauma or inflammation. A breast or nipple that becomes newly inverted must be assessed before discussing cosmetic correction because acquired inversion can occasionally indicate underlying breast disease.

It is not one standard operation: the release and support method must match the inversion grade, individual anatomy and milk-duct preservation goals.

Duct-preserving correction may be considered when anatomy allows and future breastfeeding is important. Nipple formers or suction devices may temporarily draw out a mildly inverted nipple, but they do not reliably release significant fibrous tethering. Suitability depends on the grade and cause.
